Policy description Following the "Grenelle of the Environment", a bonus-malus scheme was implemented in order to promote the purchase of less polluting vehicles while curbing the number of polluting ones in use.

Comments (background and assessment) In 2020, the bonus can only be delivered to individuals buying a car emitting a maximum of 20 g.CO2/km. Bonus of 6,000€ for cars under 45,000€; 3,000€ for cars above that threshold. No bonus for cars above 60,000€ (https://www.ecologique-solidaire.gouv.fr/bonus-ecologique-nouvelles-modalites). The malus starts being implemented at 110 g.CO2/km, with a maximum amount of 20,000€ (https://www.economie.gouv.fr/cedef/bonus-malus-automobile). Bonus maintained at 900€ for electric two- and three-wheelers. Subsidies for bikes are distributed through the premium for the purchase of bikes (http://climatepolicydatabase.org/index.php/Premium_for_the_Purchase_of_Bikes_(Bonus_v%C3%A9lo) ).
