About the database

Raising the ambition of action against climate change is urgent. The next 10 years will prove if a transition towards a sustainable, greenhouse gas (GHG) - free society can be made in time to hold temperature increase below 2°C above preindustrial levels.

Countries already successfully implement a wide range of climate and energy policies that reduce GHG emissions. The implementation of good practice policies as they already exist today can move us significantly towards a pathway compatible with 2°C.

For raising the level of ambition, it is crucial to know and analyse the current status of activities against climate change and identify additional policies countries could implement. However, existing databases cover either only some sectors or a subset of countries.

This climate policy database project, carried out by NewClimate Institute with support from the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Environment, aims to gather information on which countries are implementing good-practice policies or policies from a policy menu to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Climate policy data were compiled from various public sources (see Table below). The database covers mitigation-related policies that are implemented as of November 2015. Planned policies are excluded from the database, with an exception of energy and GHG emission targets announced as Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs) for the post-2020 period.

The long-term goal of this project is to establish an open, collaborative platform to gather all climate-related policies, with full geographical and sectoral coverage. Therefore, we highly welcome your feedback for continuous improvement of the database at: policydb@newclimate.org

The platform of the database is programmed with Semantic Media Wiki, an open-source, database driven extension of MediaWiki.

Please note that the NewClimate Policy Database is not exhaustive. For example, the policy coverage (e.g. sectors as well as the latest reporting year) and the depth of information for each policy were not equal across countries in the databases compiled in this study. Moreover, policies are implemented at subnational levels are not covered. Please also note that this database is not reviewed by national government officials.
