The EU Gas Regulation, part of the Hydrogen and Decarbonised Gas Market Package, was published in the EU Official Journal on July 15, 2024, and entered into force 20 days later, with its provisions becoming applicable six months after publication. It introduces a new regulatory framework for dedicated hydrogen infrastructure, aims to reduce methane emissions in the energy sector through mandatory measurement, reporting, and verification requirements, and establishes a Union-wide cap of 2 percent for hydrogen blended into the natural gas system at interconnection points between Member States.
