The RUPTL 2016–2025 continued the 10-year planning cycle, with updated projections for electricity demand, energy mix, and infrastructure development.

The RUPTL 2016–2025 aimed to install a total of 80.5 GW of additional power generation capacity between 2015 and 2025. The plan included a 35 GW fast-track program (2015–2019) to rapidly address electricity shortages. The energy mix targeted 20 GW from coal-fired power plants, 13 GW from gas-fired power plants, and 3.72 GW from renewables (2.4 GW hydropower, 1.2 GW geothermal, and 0.12 GW wind).
