The government's goal is for UK domestic maritime to aim for zero fuel lifecycle GHG emissions by 2050, with at least a 30% reduction by 2030 and an 80% reduction by 2040, relative to 2008 levels.
The strategy calls for expanding the UK's Emission Trading Scheme to include domestic UK maritime GHG emissions starting in 2026. The government also announced to introduce domestic fuel regulations to drive the update of zero and net-zero GHG emission fuels and energy sources.
In September 2025, the government has also announced a public-private investment package aimed at transforming the sector of GBP 1.1 billion.
