The Canada Green Buildings Strategy (CGBS), unveiled in July 2024, aims to decarbonize buildings by 2050 through comprehensive measures like modernizing the Energy Efficiency Act, phasing out oil heating systems in new constructions by 2028, and promoting heat pump adoption.
The core targets are to achieve a 3% annual retrofit rate for existing buildings to align with 2050 net-zero goals, construct 3.5 million new net-zero homes by 2030, phase out oil heating systems in new buildings starting in 2028, and reduce emissions from the buildings sector by 37% below 2005 levels by 2030.
