The Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EU/2024/1275), which entered into force on May 28, 2024, aims to accelerate the renovation of the EU's least efficient buildings and achieve a fully decarbonized building stock by 2050. The directive introduces measures such as Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for non-residential buildings, mandates that all new buildings be zero-emission by 2030, promotes the installation of solar systems, and requires a gradual phase-out of fossil fuel boilers, starting with the end of subsidies for these systems from January 2025. While Directive (EU) 2024/1275 and the earlier Directive 2018/844 currently coexist, Directive (EU) 2024/1275 will eventually fully replace Directive 2018/844 as Member States transpose it into national laws. The deadline for this transposition is January 1, 2025, for some provisions, and May 29, 2026, for others.
