In 2025, the taxation structure for the coal sector has changed significantly. The GST Compensation Cess on coal of ₹400 per tonne was removed. Instead, the GST rate on coal was raised from 5% to 18%.
Overall, this represents a substantial reduction in the overall tax burden, resulting in a cut of 17-18 paise per kWh in coal generation.
