China expanded its NEV promotion programme nationwide in 2013, introducing central government purchase subsidies for battery electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Subsidy levels depended on vehicle type and electric driving range, reaching up to around RMB 60,000 per passenger battery electric vehicle in the mid-2010s, with significantly higher support for electric buses. Subsidies were gradually reduced over time and extended in 2020, with scheduled cuts of 10% in 2020, 20% in 2021 and 30% in 2022, before the central purchase subsidy programme was phased out at the end of 2022.
