On 22 January 2025, the EU published the new Packaging Regulation (EU) 2025/40 (PPWR), replacing the previous Packaging Directive and significantly tightening product compliance rules for packaging and waste management. It introduces a mandatory conformity assessment with an EU Declaration of Conformity, sets the basis for harmonised EU-wide packaging labelling (including digital labels and disclosure of substances of concern), and will apply from 12 August 2026, with several transitional provisions and implementing acts extending into 2028–2029.
