The German government agreed on key elements of the "Kraftwerksstrategie" (power plant strategy) on February 5, 2024, focusing on the construction of up to 10 gigawatts of hydrogen-ready natural gas power plants by 2030 to support the transition to clean energy and phase out coal. The strategy aims to decarbonize the electricity sector, with plans to achieve at least 80% renewable energy in electricity generation by 2030 and a largely climate-neutral electricity system by 2035, while also developing a capacity market expected to start in 2028 to reward operators for maintaining power plant capacity. The Kraftwerkssicherheitsgesetz (Power Plant Safety Act) to implement the government's Kraftwerksstrategie (power plant strategy) is in the consulation phase.
